Woman deemed oldest US veteran set for flight to meet Obama

DETROIT (AP) -- A 110-year-old woman believed to be the nation's oldest veteran will soon be making a trip to Washington that includes a scheduled meeting with President Barack Obama.

Longtime Detroit resident Emma Didlake, a veteran of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps during World War II, is scheduled to leave Friday.

She's also planning to visit the memorial of her other favorite president, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Her trip was arranged by Talons Out Honor Flight, the southwest Michigan chapter of a national nonprofit network providing free trips for veterans to visit Washington's monuments and memorials.

Didlake only recently learned she's the United States' oldest veteran. That status is based on information gleaned by Honor Flight representatives nationwide.

Didlake joined the corps in 1943 and served about seven months.
