Monroe Police: one dead, two injured after pair of shootings Wednesday evening
MONROE (WKOW) – One person is dead and two others are seriously hurt after a pair of shootings in Monroe – one of which involved a law enforcement officer.
Police Chief Fred Kelley said police were called to the 700 Block of 17th Street in Monroe after two people were reported shot. Kelley said one of those two victims was killed and another was seriously injured. Kelley said 911 calls indicated the suspect in the shooting had fled the scene on foot.
Kelley said police were then called again at 7:36 p.m. After someone spotted a person, armed and matching the description of the shooting suspect, in the 1000 block of 12th Street.
Kelley said officers responded and the suspect pointed a gun at them. He said officers shot the suspect, who he believes was seriously wounded and transported to the hospital.
“At this point there is no further danger to the public because we believe the suspect has now been captured and unfortunately shot,” Kelley said.
Kelley said no police officers were injured in the shooting. He said the officer who shot the suspect is with the Green County Sheriff's Office, and that a State Department of Justice officer involved shooting team has been called in to investigate the incident in accordance with state law.
“This is the first shooting homicide we're aware of, I've been here 35 years we haven't had one in that time period,” Kelley said. “I think it was a long time before that, if ever, that we've had a shooting type homicide like this.”
“So it is a very serious matter in our community,” Kelley said.
