3D printed milk cap detects when it's gone bad

Posted:

(CNN) -- No more crying over spoiled milk, thanks to advances in 3D printing technology.

A team of scientists printed a plastic milk cap with embedded electronics to wirelessly monitor the freshness of milk.

Fresh milk isn't the story, the ability to print a plastic circuit with sensitive electronic components is what's important here.

The new technology could make it possible for shoppers to check the freshness of shelved food from a cellphone.

The findings are published in a new open-access journal in the nature publishing group called Microsystems and Nanoengineering.
