Man attacks Jerusalem gay pride parade, weeks after release from prison for similar attack

Posted:

Police in Jerusalem say the man who stabbed six people during an annual gay pride parade today was the same man who had stabbed several people at the parade a decade ago. They say the anti-gay extremist (Yishai Schlissel) had just been released from prison three weeks ago after serving time for that attack.

An emergency service official says six of the people who were attacked today were seriously hurt.

Police say the attack took place despite a "massive" security presence. They say the attacker was arrested at the scene.

An Associated Press photographer saw the man enter the throng of people with his hand in his coat and within seconds raise a knife and begin stabbing people in the back. Police pounced on him and arrested him.

Media reports say the man had hid in a nearby supermarket, and jumped out to attack the march when it passed nearby.

The reports also say that thousands of Jerusalem residents who had not initially taken part in the parade joined in after the attack in solidarity.
