Senate voting on Planned Parenthood, prelude to fall battle

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate is likely to block a Republican effort to halt federal funds to Planned Parenthood. Yet Monday's vote is just a prelude to a fall faceoff with higher stakes -- a potential government shutdown that could affect next year's presidential and congressional elections.

GOP senators seemed short of the 60 votes they'd need to begin full debate on the money cutoff. The effort is their response to an anti-abortion group's covertly recorded videos of Planned Parenthood officials dispassionately describing how they provide aborted fetus tissue for medical research.

Planned Parenthood foes say they think the group sells the tissue for a profit, which is illegal. The organization and its supporters say it has broken no laws and calls the GOP effort an attack on women's health care.
