Cars submerged in sinkhole after water main break in Madison
MADISON (WKOW) -- A few cars are submerged in Madison after a water main break early Friday morning.
Authorities say the call came in before 4:30 a.m. at Rivers Edge Apartments on Fordem Avenue. Water is filling up in the basements of two buildings with underground parking, though no water got into the residential areas. Buses are going to get residents.
Water mains have been turned off, but there is a gas smell in the air. The water main was privately owned by the apartment complex and will be fixed by a private contractor.
The problem caused a large sinkhole to open up in the parking lot of the apartment, and several cars are submerged in the water.
Assistant Fire Chief Clayton Christenson told WKOW water in the parking garages was "knee to waist deep."
