VIROQUA, Wis. (AP) -- The remains of an unidentified homicide victim have been exhumed in Vernon County and sent to the State Crime Lab for analysis.

The woman's body was found along a rural road near Westby in May 1984. She had been bludgeoned in the head and her hands were cut off.

Vernon County Sheriff John Spears hopes DNA testing will finally provide some answers on Jane Doe's identity. Spears says her family will know investigators never gave up.

Sheriff's officials say more than 400 leads on missing females from age 50 to 65 have been investigated over the years in an attempt to identify the woman.
