School unveils memorial to Germanwings crash victims

A high school that lost 16 students and two teachers in the Germanwings plane crash in March is inaugurating a memorial to the victims that features 18 cherry trees.

The memorial being unveiled Friday at the Joseph Koenig high school in the German town of Haltern includes a steel plaque with the 18 victims' names, as well as the trees. Principal Ulrich Wessel told WDR radio it will combine "rust as a symbol of transience (with) the flowers and blossoming trees as a symbol of life."

The teenagers and their teachers were on their way home from an exchange trip to Spain when Flight 9525 from Barcelona to Duesseldorf crashed into the French Alps on March 24, killing all 150 people aboard. Prosecutors believe the co-pilot intentionally crashed the plane.
