Wisconsin fitness equipment maker fined $3M over defects

COTTAGE GROVE, Wis. (AP) -- The Consumer Product Safety Commission has fined a Wisconsin fitness equipment maker $3 million for failing to report defects in its machines.
The agency said Friday that the defects in Matrix Fitness Ascent Trainers and Elliptical Trainers allowed a buildup of moisture from perspiration or cleaning liquids in the power sockets of the units.
It says Cottage Grove-based Johnson Health Tech received multiple reports of smoking, sparking and fires, and made two design changes to fix the problem, but failed to immediately report the incidents or design changes to the CPSC.
Chairman Elliot Kaye says it's the second penalty levied against Johnson Health Tech in the past decade, and he hopes it's the last.
The company says it doesn't believe the fine was warranted and safety is a top priority.
