Walker unveils plan for replacing Obama health care law

Posted: Updated:

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker's plan for replacing President Barack Obama's signature health care law does not say how many people would have health insurance coverage under his idea.

The Wisconsin governor released an outline of his plan to The Associated Press before a Tuesday speech in a Minneapolis suburb where he was to unveil his proposal. It is his first major policy initiative of the presidential campaign.

Walker's plan would extend refundable tax credits to help pay for private health insurance based on age instead of income. He would also restructure Medicaid and allow people to shop for insurance across state lines.

The biggest hurdle Walker and any opponent of the law faces is actually getting the current law repealed. That would take 60 votes in the Senate.
