Number of fatal bike crashes double last year

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The number of bicyclists killed in crashes this year in Wisconsin is more than double last year.

Nine people have died while biking compared to four fatalities in 2014.

An analysis by a University of Milwaukee traffic safety researcher found more than a third of recent fatalities involved vehicles that hit the bicyclists from behind. That's what happened in the Washington County on Sunday. A 50-year-old Germantown man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. Police have since arrested the suspected driver.

The Journal Sentinel reports the UW-Milwaukee analysis shows motorists were primarily responsible in 58 percent of fatal bike crashes from 2011 to 2013.
