Portage Co. Crime Stoppers: Fake Money


STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - Portage County investigators are searching for counterfeiters who have cashed hundreds of dollars in bogus bills at area businesses.

"Since the beginning of June, we have we have been getting a lot of counterfeit bills in Stevens Point and around the county. We have over 25 cases in regards to fake $20, $10 and $5 bills," Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas said.

Investigators say many of the bills look and feel real and go undetected.

"It is often the banks that find them, not the stores. When the businesses take the money in to the bank, they find out it is fake money and the business is out that money," Sheriff Lukas said.

He advises business owners and retail workers check out the U.S. Secret Service web site www.secretservice.gov  for tips on detecting fake bills.
