UN refugee chief seeks better EU cooperation on migrants

Posted:

The chief of the U.N. refugee agency says the Europe Union needs to take a "quantum leap" in cooperation to better deal with the influx of thousands of refugees fleeing violence in Africa and the Middle East.

Antonio Guterres says part of that could be for the EU to deploy triage centers in places facing heavy migrant inflows. He said such "hotspots" could help distinguish refugees from others who "don't need protection" -- like economic migrants.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees spoke Wednesday in Geneva after meeting with French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

Cazeneuve noted reticence in places facing heavy migrant flows like Italy and Greece about hotspots, but said EU partners could send in support teams "if those countries accept."
