1996: Going back to school

(WAOW) -- Summer is coming to a close and that means the start of school is right around the corner.

In this week's Throwback Thursday -- we go back to the first day of class in 1996.

"Welcome to everybody, we are glad to have you all back. A lot of smiling faces and everybody is dressed and polished up for a new year."

It's a new school year and a new experience for these kindergarteners, as they start their first day of classes. Even the Pledge of Allegiance is something foreign. Late students find their way to their classrooms, guided by helpful teachers and assistants.

"The first day of kindergarten, we'll have a good day."

Class started with students unpacking their new supplies. Everyone is also asked to bring a box of tissues for the class and the collection usually lasts all year long.

"If anyone has the sniffles or something, there's always a tissue box."

The 4th grade classes are already digging in by playing a memory testing name game. It's back to friends and learning for another 178 days.
