Goodbye home offices: shared workspaces gaining ground

MIAMI (AP) -- Shared workspace companies are popping up in major metropolitan areas around the country.

The spaces are organized with a high emphasis on design and appeal to entrepreneurs and freelancers working from home or coffee shops.

Members can rent communal desk space starting at about $200 a month to a dedicated office, without a long-term contract in most cases. Most also are open 24/7 and offer networking opportunities because of their communal nature.

University of Michigan business professor Gretchen Spreitzer says shared workspaces are not new, but have reached about 4,000 in the U.S. and around the world.

She says traditional offices are adapting the concept to their spaces, leasing to solo workers.
