Former cop starts 'Project Blue Light'

(CNN) -- For some people in Iowa, blue bulbs symbolize their support of police.

Those bulbs are part of "Project Blue Light" that was started by former police officer Brian Waid.

He handed out more than 100 blue bulbs that people in Charles City use on their front porches.

When a porch goes blue, that shows support for law enforcement officers.

Waid says he's surprised how many people in town are on board with it.

"When I was a police officer I guess I didn't recognize all the support that was in the community because I think a lot of people don't know how to share it, how to show the support. So to see everyone come together right now and want a blue light and want to display it, with everything going on right now in the country, it's just outrageously amazing," Waid said.

Waid says he came up with the idea after the recent killing of a sheriff's deputy in Texas.
