UPDATE: Suspect killed in Kentucky trooper death

(CNN) -- The man suspected of shooting and killing a Kentucky State Trooper has died, according to Kentucky State Police.

Officials say Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks, 25, gunned down Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder after a traffic stop and highway chase on Interstate 24.

Authorities say the trooper pulled over a car driven by the suspect Sunday night. After making contact, Johnson-Shanks sped off, then later stopped suddenly, causing the trooper's cruiser to hit the car.

Police say Johnson-Shanks got out and fired several shots into the cruiser, hitting the trooper.

Johnson-Shanks then ran away.

Trooper Ponder was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Johnson-Shanks was found in a wooded area Monday morning, where police say he pointed a gun at officers. Kentucky State Police say a trooper shot the suspect. Johnson-Shanks was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
