Name, date found in Soviet plane uncovered in Polish river

Posted:

A historian says a name and probably a date are scratched onto a piece of plastic found amid parts of a Soviet World War II plane that has been retrieved from a Polish river.

Parts of the fighter bomber were pulled out last month from the Bzura River in central Poland, when water level dropped amid a drought.

Zdzislaw Leszczynski, a historian in nearby Wyszogrod, said Monday a plastic piece with the Cyrillic name of Dyachenko N F and the figures 21 12 44 scratched on it was found among the twisted wreckage. A paper military dog tag was also found but is illegible, as was a film from a camera.

He has passed the information onto the Russian Embassy, which might be able to identify the crew member.
