Athlete of the Week: Jack Mittelsteadt, D.C. Everest

WESTON (WAOW) -- The D.C. Everest boys soccer team appears to be inspired by the success of the school's state champion girls soccer team.

The Evergreens are off to a 7-0-1 start, and along the way, junior Jack Mittelsteadt has been lighting up the scoreboard. The forward leads DCE with 15 goals on the season.

On top of that, he also has a good head on his shoulders - he knows enough to deflect that credit off to his teammates.

"It all starts with a strong defense and midfield playing behind me, and also giving me great balls," Mittelsteadt said. "It makes it a lot easier to score."

"He's worked tremendously hard in the offseason, working on his footwork and his skills on the ball," D.C. Everest head coach Manny Pollak said. "Anytime he gets time and space to take a shot, he takes it. And more often than not, it goes in the back of the net."

It's possible Jack has learned a little something from his older sister. Maddie Mittelsteadt led the D.C. Everest girls soccer team to a state title last spring. She's now a freshman on the women's team at Wisconsin.

"When she still went to school at Everest, we did a bunch of intramural leagues and she was always on a different team, so we played against each other," Mittelsteadt said.

"(I learned to) carry the ball with speed," he continued. "That's how she got all of her goals was by running past the defenders. If you're faster than them it's a lot easier to get open for an easy shot."
