Burkina Faso demonstrators protest proposed compromise deal

Posted:

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) -- Demonstrators are taking to the streets of Burkina Faso's capital to protest a proposed compromise solution to the country's deepening political crisis.

Regional mediators announced late Sunday a plan that calls for new elections by the end of November. The compromise proposal also would let loyalists of ex-President Blaise Compaore be candidates in the vote.

That doesn't satisfy the protesters who have been burning tires since one of Compaore's former top aides seized power in a coup last week. The demonstrators are calling for the immediate removal of the military junta.

West African states are due to discuss the proposal Tuesday in Abuja, Nigeria.

The streets of Ouagadougou remained tense Monday, with gas stations, banks and shops still closed following last week's military power grab.
