Fire damages two businesses in downtown Wausau

WAUSAU ( WAOW)-- A fire damages Downtown Grocery and Evolve Fitness in Wausau Tuesday night.

The fire started about around 5:30 p.m. near the corner of 3rd and McClellan streets.

Smoke could be seen for several blocks rising from the building.

A Battalion Chief with the Wausau Fire Department believes the fire started in an outside alley and spread to the buildings, but there is no word on what sparked the blaze.

Two cars near the buildings were also damaged.
No one was injured in the fire.
The owner of Janke Book Store owns the building.  She said she ran out of the building when she saw fire truck.
"I went running and saw the fire trucks around the Downtown Grocery building and I saw the flames, well the smoke and the flames were in the back alley," said Jane Janke.

The Wausau fire department worked quickly to get the fire under control.  "Next from here is just double checking that we have fire out everywhere so we'll pull out additional ceilings and open any walls that may appear to have fire in them and make sure the fire is out completely," said Battalion Chief Paul Czararapata.
