Washed out Clark County culverts to be replaced with bridge

CLARK COUNTY (WQOW) -- A bridge will replace a Clark County culvert that recently washed away, and just three years ago was the scene of a fatal tragedy.

Heavy rain washed out culverts on County Highway M in early September, and, luckily, no one was hurt. But, in June of 2012 three people were killed there when the same thing happened.

After the fatal washout, crews installed two new culverts, which were suppose to handle twice the amount of water. The Clark County Highway Commissioner told News 18 they were shocked to see it wash away again this past September.

The road has been closed since then, and just Wednesday morning the Clark County highway committee approved building a wooden bridge in that spot.

The highway commissioner says it will cost about $244,000, and the county will have to pay for it all up front because it needs to be done as soon as possible.

The commissioner said the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will reimburse the county for about half of the cost. There's no timeline yet on when the bridge will be complete and the highway will re-open.
