Signs of struggle in Illinois officer shooting

FOX LAKE, IL (AP) -- The lead investigator on the case of a northern Illinois police officer found shot dead has confirmed that the police lieutenant was shot with his own weapon.

Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Commander George Filenko also says there was evidence of a struggle at the scene.

Lt. Charles Gliniewicz was found Sept. 1 after he radioed that he was pursuing three suspicious men in a remote area of the village south of the state line.

Despite a massive manhunt, police haven't made any arrests or identified any suspects.

Filenko told reporters Thursday that he was releasing the new information after determining that it wouldn't hurt the investigation.  He emphasized the investigation was being conducted as a homicide probe, though detectives weren't ruling anything out, including the possibility of suicide.
