WAUSAU (WAOW) - A 16-year-old boy told police he threw a cigarette into a dumpster filled with cardboard behind one of two downtown Wausau businesses heavily damaged by fire last week, Capt. Greg Hagenbucher said Monday.
The boy said Tuesday's fire was an accident and he did not start it intentionally, Hagenbucher said in a statement.
The fire, reported behind Downtown Grocery about 5:30 p.m., damaged that store and Evolve Fitness and also burned two cars parked nearby. No one was hurt.
Police linked the boy to the fire after receiving an anonymous tip Thursday that a boy from Wausau East High School was talking about being responsible for starting the fire, Hagenbucher said in a statement.
Hagenbucher said police have recommended the teenager be charged with negligent handling of burning material in juvenile court.
