Authorities to outline case against accused contract killer

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Prosecutors in California will begin making their case against an admitted enforcer for Mexican drug cartels who claims to have killed dozens across the U.S.

The Tulare County District Attorney's Office charges Jose Manuel Martinez with gunning down nine people across Tulare, Kern and Santa Barbara counties.

Martinez was arrested in 2013 after crossing the border from Mexico to Arizona.

He was first charged in Alabama, where authorities say he started his long, violent career.

Authorities say he admitted to the killings. But he refuses to name his cartel associates.

Authorities say they believed Martinez because he gave details that nobody else knows.

After prosecutors in California present evidence, a judge will decide if he should stand trial.

Attorneys representing Martinez did not respond to requests for comment.
