Fire ants make 'floating island'

(CNN) -- Check out this island of floating fire ants.

This band of brave insects was spotted braving floodwaters near Charleston, South Carolina.

The ants apparently use jaws, claws and sticky stuff on their legs to form life rafts.

Their exteriors are already water repelling.

The most important members of the colony, the larvae and the queen ant, are kept safe in the middle.

This real-life ant log is also a snack for predators like fish who suck down the ants one by one from underneath the water, but the colony's goal is to make it to dry land and rebuild.
