Burkina Faso sets new post-coup election date for Nov. 29

Posted:

Political party representatives say Burkina Faso's presidential and parliamentary elections will take place on Nov. 29 after a short-lived coup in September upset the original election timeline.

Representatives met with transitional President Michel Kafando on Tuesday before announcing the new election date.

The vote was originally scheduled for Oct. 11. Elections will end the transition government set up after former President Blaise Compaore was ousted in October 2014 in a popular uprising after nearly 30 years in power.

The elite presidential guard was unhappy Compaore's supporters couldn't run in the elections. They arrested Kafando and interim Prime Minister Yacouba Isaac Zida on Sept. 16.

Gen. Gilbert Diendere took power but stepped down. The transitional government was reinstalled Sept. 23. The presidential guard was disbanded, and Diendere is now in custody.
