Peru to open probe into alleged military corruption

Peru's defense minister says the armed forces will open an investigation into allegations of drug-related corruption among military officers in the world's No. 1 cocaine-producing valley.

Jakke Valakivi made the announcement after The Associated Press published an investigation Wednesday that found Peru's armed forces failed to prevent small planes from ferrying more than a ton of cocaine a day to Bolivia.

He said the military's inspector general would lead the probe.

Prosecutors, drug police, former military officers and current and former U.S. drug officials told the AP that Peru's military has turned a blind eye to the traffic.

In addition, the government scrapped plans this year to buy the radar required to enforce a drug plane shoot-down law passed in August.
