Thousands descend on Madison church for rare look at saint

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Thousands of people have descended on a Madison parish for a rare look at a Roman Catholic saint who died more than a century ago.
The remains of St. Maria Goretti went on view Friday morning at St. Maria Goretti Parish in Madison. Her skeleton, encased in wax, is scheduled to remain there until 7 a.m. Saturday.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports about 1,400 people attended a special Mass just prior to the viewing.
The Madison parish is one of only two Wisconsin stops on the 53-city tour, along with one in Elm Grove.
Maria Goretti is the patron saint of Catholic youth. She died in 1902 in Italy from injuries inflicted during an attempted rape. She forgave her attacker on her deathbed. The church canonized her in 1950.
