New guidelines for mammograms

Posted:

(CNN) -- Less is apparently better than more when it comes to breast cancer screenings.

That's according to new guidelines issued Tuesday by the American Cancer Society.

The organization says women should start getting mammograms at 45 instead of 40, and skip routine manual breast checks by doctors.

According to the organization, medical literature shows the measures are not very effective.

ACS says although mammograms can save lives, they also have a relatively high false positive rate, which can be harmful.

Critics of the new guidelines say the American Cancer Society's research is based on film mammograms, which is nearly obsolete in the US.

Newer digital mammograms have a lower false positive rate and do a better job of detecting cancer.

So now depending on who you ask, women should begin getting mammograms at either age 40, 45 or 50.
