Some aldermen urge Green Bay police to catch more speeders

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Some city council members are urging Green Bay police to catch more speeders.

Green Bay police officers are ticketing speeders at a fraction of the rate they were seven years ago. Press-Gazette Media reports that has some aldermen questioning the department's commitment to keeping roads safe. They say speeding is the No. 1 complaint they hear.

Citation records show that the number of speeding tickets written by patrol officers has fallen 83 percent since 2008. Total traffic stops fell 34 percent for the same period.

But Capt. Paul Ebel says the city's traffic enforcement strategy is keeping the streets safe. He says serious accidents fell 30 percent during that same period -- even though the department no longer has dedicated traffic patrol officers like it did before.
