Georgia man to be sentenced for 2nd theft of sea turtle eggs

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) -- A Georgia man faces returning to prison for up to five years for his second offense of stealing sea turtle eggs.

Sixty-year-old Lewis Jackson is scheduled to appear for sentencing Wednesday morning in U.S. District Court in Brunswick. He pleaded guilty in August to swiping 84 eggs laid by federally protected loggerhead sea turtles on the beach of remote Sapelo Island.

Jackson is no stranger to Judge Lisa Godbey Wood. She sentenced him to six months in prison for committing the same crime in 2012. Jackson was free from prison for less than two years when he was arrested again.

Conservationists say turtle egg thefts are rare, but there is a black market fueled by folklore that eating the eggs improves sexual performance.
