Missouri shooting plot suspect appeals 15-year sentence

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A defense attorney says a southwest Missouri man accused of planning shootings at a movie theater and store only thought about an attack.

Attorney Donald Cooley told Missouri Supreme Court judges Wednesday that Blaec Lammers didn't intend to harm others when he bought two rifles. But the attorney general's office argued 23-year-old Lammers plotted and took steps to commit a shooting.

Authorities say Lammers told them he originally planned to open fire on the opening-night crowd for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2" at a Bolivar theater in November 2012 but opted for a Walmart instead.

Police arrested Lammers after his mother contacted them with concerns. Shots weren't fired.

Lammers was sentenced to 15 years in prison for first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
