Exiled prosecutor urges sanctions on Venezuela

Posted:

The former Venezuelan prosecutor who fled last week to Miami and denounced his role rigging evidence in the trial against Leopoldo Lopez is urging the U.S. to apply sanctions against other officials who helped convict the opposition leader to almost 14 years in prison.

Franklin Nieves said Friday in an interview from Miami that he deeply regrets his actions but said he was under orders to seek Lopez's arrest to stave off a wave of anti-government protests last year.

He said he hopes to make amends by working with U.S. authorities to expose abuses by Venezuela's justice system.

Venezuelan exile groups are urging the U.S. to reject Nieves' request for asylum.
