Wisconsin jail nurse revives inmate who overdosed

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A nurse at the Dane County Jail was able to revive a newly arrested inmate who apparently overdosed on heroin.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office says Madison police arrested the 33-year-old man for possessing drug paraphernalia, and he arrived at the jail about 5 p.m. Friday.

Just before 8 that night, another inmate alerted a deputy that the man appeared to have passed out.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the inmate was conscious when deputies contacted him, but his condition deteriorated. The sheriff's office says his medical problems were consistent with a heroin overdose. A nurse revived him by delivering a dose of the heroin antidote Narcan.

The inmate was then taken to a hospital for treatment.
