Help for homework help: Teaching parents Common Core math

Posted:

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) -- Any parent who has tried to help a second-grader with homework has noticed math is not what it used to be.

Now schools around the country are unlocking the secrets of Common Core math for mystified parents.

They're holding special classes or giving out materials designed for adults so they can help children with their math homework.

In Westerly, Rhode Island, the city's parent academy ran a free, three-part series called "Parents Can Help With Math."

Parents say it has helped them understand terms such as "10 frames" and "arrays."

A group in Arizona has created a book for parents with clear graphics that demonstrate the strategies.

Educators say after parents learn, they're more willing to get on board as controversy has swirled around Common Core.
