Video shows heroic actions of officer responding to Chippewa Falls house fire

Chippewa Falls (WQOW) - Chippewa Falls Police Department posted a heroic video of one of their officers responding to a house fire Friday night.

According to the department's post, Officer Craig Mantzke was the first to arrive on scene and entered the home that was fully engulfed in flames. The video shows dash cam footage of the officer arriving at the scene and body cam footage of him entering the home. They said Mantzke searched the home through the smoke and flames, and found the family dog trapped inside. The family was not home.

Mantzke told News 18 on Monday that he was worried people were home when he saw cars in the garage. "I needed to get in there, and make sure everyone is out and OK," Mantzke said. "That's the only thing on your mind. I mean, we wouldn't be in this line of work if we didn't want to help people. Yea, it could have come crashing down, but that's what we are here for."

Mantzke also told News 18 that this was the first burning home he has gone into, and it will be one he likely won't forget.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
