Former minister named interim leader of Canada Conservatives

Posted:

The Conservative Party of Canada has chosen Rona Ambrose as interim leader following Stephen Harper's resounding election defeat to Justin Trudeau's Liberals.

The party announced Ambrose, a former health and ex-environment minister, as interim leader on Thursday after a vote. A permanent replacement is expected to be named sometime next year.

Stephen Harper resigned as leader after the Oct. 19 election loss.

Harper, first elected prime minister in 2006, nudged a traditionally left center country to the right by lowering sales and corporate taxes, avoiding climate change legislation and staunchly backing Israel's right wing government. He forged an alliance of old and new conservative parties to form the Conservative Party of Canada in 2003.

Trudeau, the son of late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, was sworn in as prime minister Wednesday.
