Walker calls for bipartisan support for Oscar Mayer workers

Posted:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker says Democrats should stop partisan finger-pointing and work with Republicans to help people who will lose their jobs when the Oscar Mayer plant closes in Madison.

In a letter to Democratic legislators Friday, Walker says he's committed to helping those affected. Walker says Kraft Heinz surprised everyone this week when it announced it would close the 96-year-old Madison facility within two years as part of a downsizing that shutters six other plants in North America.

Some Democrats had sharply criticized the Walker administration, asking whether it had done enough to try to prevent the move.

Walker says the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation reached out to Kraft Heinz but the company said its decision was final. Walker says he's asked for a meeting with Kraft Heinz leadership anyway.
