Capitol Christmas tree coming from Rhinelander

The Christmas tree for our state's capitol has been chosen, and it will not disappoint.

Down by a peaceful lake in Rhinelander, the chosen tree is the centerpiece of Bill Kowieski's backyard.  But the tree's roots go deeper than dirt. Back in 1985, Bill's son, Brad, planted the sapling in his backyard when he was in fourth grade.  Thirty years later, Brad has a family of his own that lives right next door to his childhood home, where his parents still live.

The beautiful balsam fir reaches 40 feet, but in Rhinelander it will leave just a stump behind.  The Kowieski's said it is their honor to donate their tree to be Wisconsin's official Capitol Christmas tree this year.

Governor Scott Walker announced that the tree will don a Wisconsin sports theme this year, with ornaments created by students around the state.  The tree will head to Madison later this month.
