Marathon County Crime Stoppers: Elderly woman's purse stolen

TOWN OF BERLIN (WAOW)- An 87-year old Marathon County woman hit a robber with her cane several times but was unsuccessful in stopping the thief from stealing her purse.

Investigators say the robber got away with about $100 along with all of the woman's personal identification papers, keys and glasses.

It happened about 1:00 p.m. on September 21 in the Town of Berlin, which is west of Wausau.

The elderly woman was driving home on Naugart Drive and noticed a cranberry colored car following her.

"When she pulled into her driveway the cranberry color car also pulled in.  The suspect got out and told the woman her car lights were not working.  As the woman got out of her car and thanked the "good samaritan" the suspect grabbed her purse ," Marathon County Sheriff's Deputy Dale Ruechel said.

Investigators say the elderly woman used her cane to hit the woman but was unable to stop her from stealing the purse.

"This is very concerning that someone would target an elderly person and take advantage of them like that. This doesn't happen very often  in our area, " Deputy Ruechel said.
