Lawmaker urges committee to OK license revocation bill

Posted:
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Democratic legislator is trying to convince the Assembly's judiciary committee to approve his bill requiring state officials to revoke repeat drunken drivers' licenses for at least a decade.
Rep. Eric Genrich told the committee during a hearing Thursday that the bill isn't a cure-all for drunken driving but still represents attempt to address habitual offenders.
Under the bill, the Department of Transportation would be required to permanently revoke the license of anyone caught for drunken driving five times or more. The agency also would have to permanently revoke the license of anyone with three or more drunken driving offenses and two or more convictions for serious crimes involving a vehicle. Offenders could apply for license reinstatement after 10 years.
The committee hasn't scheduled a vote on the bill.
