Oxford Dictionaries names word of the year

Posted:

A new word of the year has been named. But this time, it's a little different than normal. It's not actually a word.

Oxford Dictionaries named an emoji as the word of the year. If you've texted a millennial, you've probably seen this happy, yellow, cartoon face shedding two giant tears. The official name is "face with tears of joy." It usually used as a substitute for "lol."

Every year Oxford Dictionaries picks a word that they think captures the year's biggest trends or changes in the English language. The organization's president says emojis are increasingly being used as a substitute for alphabetic scripts due to the fast pace of digital communication.
