NEW LONDON (WAOW) - A five-year-old pregnant horse was sexually assaulted near New London and investigators have questioned a person with a past history of such behavior, Waupaca County Sheriff Brad Hardel said Monday.
No one has been arrested, the sheriff said, declining further comment other than the "person of interest" denied involvement in the assault.
Hardel refused to disclose the person's name.
"Horse owners should be vigilant about keeping watch over their horses and should notify their local law enforcement agency if they see something suspicious," Hardel said.
The owner found the horse injured and bleeding in a pasture Sunday afternoon, the sheriff said. A veterinarian determined the horse was injured during a sexual assault,
The mare was hobbled so she couldn't move before the assault, Hardel said. “I think that there were instruments used on the horse. It is pretty sad for sure."
The horse's owner believes the assault occurred Saturday night or early Sunday morning as the horse was acting normal late Saturday afternoon, Hardel said.
The incident took place near Crain Road about one-half mile east of Highway T in Lebanon Township, he said.
The mare and foal are expected to survive, the sheriff said.
