Chancellor: $8 million spent to retain Madison professors

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The University of Wisconsin-Madison has spent at least $8 million since last summer to keep top faculty members following the Legislature's cuts to higher education.

UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank is telling the Board of Regents that retaining key professors will take a continuing investment as other universities try to lure them away. Blank told regents meeting Thursday in Madison that the university is an investment for Wisconsin, not just a budget expense -- and it will need more funding to remain a top public research institution.

The State Journal says Blank cited 48 retention cases in the current fiscal year. She says the $8 million helped keep 41 professors at Madison.

The current state budget cut funding for the UW System by $250 million over two years and stripped tenure policies from state law.
