Fishermen anticipate cloudy conditions for sturgeon season

Posted:

OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) -- The upcoming sturgeon spearing season in Wisconsin could be frustrating for participants who are expected to encounter murky water in Lake Winnebago and upriver lakes.

WLUK-TV reports that some fishermen are beginning to scout out the underwater conditions in an effort to prepare for the beginning of sturgeon spearing season on Feb. 13.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs says that Lake Winnebago near Oshkosh had an average clarity of six feet last week. He says a warm December and a late freeze on the lake caused the cloudy conditions.

Koenigs advises fishermen to focus on shallower water, where there might be better visibility.
