Assembly to vote on drug treatment dollars

Posted:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Drug treatment and diversion programs would get an additional $2 million annually under a bill the state Assembly is set to take up.

The money would come out of the state Department of Health Services account for mental health hospitals and institutions and be redistributed to counties through grants.

The measure is part of a package of legislation Rep. John Nygren, a Marinette Republican, has introduced to slow the spread of heroin.

Democrats have complained about spending the money given revenue projections show the state will finish the current state budget with $70.2 million, down from earlier projections of $164.5 million. The Joint Finance Committee unanimously approved the bill earlier this month, though.

The Assembly is set to consider the bill during a floor session Tuesday afternoon.
