Athlete of the Week: Macey Kilty

Underestimate Stratford's Macey Kilty and you could end up like most of her opponents -- flat on your back.

“Macey is a very unique individual,” Stratford wrestling coach Joe Schwabe said. “Very seldom do you get an athlete like that. Not only does she train super, super hard in a sport that's obviously dominated by males, but she excels, and to have a girl on your team that can not only push the boys, but pretty much beats most of them, it's pretty fun.”

Ranked No. 3 in the state in the 106-pound weight class, Kilty has been killing it in this, her freshman year for the Tigers. For Division III's top ranked team, she is an impressive 23-3 this season. Against a field made up almost entirely of boys, the young lady's strategy on that mat is all mental. Her dedication and work ethic are the keys to her supreme confidence.

“I just want to make my opponent to quit,” Kilty said. “”Make him worry, not myself. I know I've trained hard enough, more than my opponent. That's what I go into my wrestling matches thinking, that I trained harder than them. I trained more in the off-season than them, and I went to more camps than them.”

Although an injury kept Kilty out of the Marawood Conference tournament, she returned to regionals with a vengence, scoring a first period pin to take the podium in the finals. With individual and team state just around the corner, Kilty has her sights set on beating on the boys on her way to a state title.

“People in Wisconsin are thinking, you know... 'She's a girl, but she's just as tough as the boys',” Kilty said. “I want to win a state title, and I want to prove to Wisconsin that a girl can win state."

While Stratford has already qualified for team state, Kilty will have her opportunity to qualify for individual state this Saturday when sectionals take place in Shawano.
