Athlete of the Week: Emma Haugen

At the Division I sectional meet last weekend, Marshfield's Emma Haugen literally vaulted passed her competition. Her score of 9.1 in the vault event was good enough for a third-place finish and ticket to State.

Not too shabby. Especially for a first-year Tiger.

“Emma's a super-talented freshman,” Marshfield gymnastics coach Allie Dryer said. “She's been doing gymnastics for many years, but this is her first year completing for the high school. She's a ball of energy. She's so much fun and she works hard.”

In addition to being Marshfield's one-and-only tumbler advancing to State, Haugen took top honors at Conference this year, placing first on the mat. Thanks to the push that comes naturally at the next level of competition, Haugen is honing her exceptional skills and abilities across the board.

“Like Freshman through seniors... they're a lot older, so they've been doing it a lot longer,” Haugen said. “They have cooler skills and harder skills, and it pushes you to want to do that too, so the competition is definitely good.”

The WIAA State Gymnastics Meet -- taking place this Saturday at Wisconsin Rapid's Lincoln High School -- will be yet another healthy dose of competition for Haugen, who only stands to get better as her time tumbling for the Tigers continues.

“Having the chance to compete at State now... it's crazy, there's so much going on, there's so many people... there's so much pressure,” coach Dryer said. “So I think she can get this one under her belt and then going into the next few years kind of develop that calm attitude during competition, to be able to ignore the pressure and just build from there.”
