Pointers baseball team a work in progress

Posted:

After starting their 2016 campaign in sunny Auburndale, Fla., the UW-Stevens Point baseball team is back in town, enduring the early-season soggy conditions of Central Wisconsin. But, perhaps the change of climate will do them good, as Florida's pleasant weather didn't make for much of a pleasant start to the Pointers season.

Point went just 3-7 on the road trip.

"We have some things to work on," Pointers third baseman/outfielder Alex Slowee said. "We definitely could've done a little better down there, we should've done better down there, but... we come back here, start working hard and getting in the conference season."

This year is the first for Point under new head coach Jeremy Jirschele, who served the past four years as the team's assistant coach under former skipper Pat Bloom. Despite the tough start, the first-year coach isn't shaken.

"We play a tough schedule down there," Jirschele said. "And for good reason, because the WIAC is a very tough conference... and we kind of pick that schedule, so it kind of weathers us a little bit, also it kind of tests us in all aspects of the game... and it did that."

Jirschele has been tasked with coaching a very young team. The Pointers currently have 19 first and second year players on the roster; regardless, Jerschele is committed to winning sooner rather than later.

"Since we've come back, I've had some ask me if this is a rebuilding year, and I say, 'No, it's not," Jerschele said. "Like I said, we didn't play any cupcakes down in Florida, and our record will show that, but at the same time, we have some new guys, and a lot of new guys in positions... I think they're starting to come with the territory and make those plays... And in the end, I think it's going to turn out real well for us as long as we can make some minor adjustments."

The Pointers' Wisconsin schedule begins tomorrow at St. Norbert. Game one of a doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
